The 4th “now annual” Nisqually River is a fun run with a long season. WRRR and other paddling groups will help clean up the Nisqually.  We will do a rower’s progression during the event with the goal of “stopping anywhere” and superior boat control.

The Washington Kayak Club, Washington Recreational River Runners and Paddle Trails Canoe Club invite you to join us on April 6th to help clean up the Nisqually River once again.  This is our fourth year of  what has become an annual event.  As in past years, we are undertaking this cleanup with support from the Nisqually River Foundation and other partners, including American Whitewater, American Rivers and its National River Cleanup® Initiative, American Canoe Association, Jackson Kayak, Thurston County Public Works, LeMay Pacific Disposal, City of Centralia, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Where Will the Cleanup Be Held?

We will be primarily cleaning up two sections of the Nisqually River: 1) McKenna Park to Nisqually Park (aka Yelm Hydro Plant) – Class II-III – 9 miles; and 2) Nisqually Park to the 6th Avenue S.E. WDFW Water Access Site – Class I-II – 8 miles. There may be wood or other hazards on both sections of the river.

What Volunteers are Needed and What Must I do to Join this Event?

We need volunteers to boat the river and to help on land at our water access sites.

All volunteers must register here, check-in on the day of the Event, and agree to a Waiver and Release of Liability to participate in this Event.  This includes boaters who have signed up for a trip being sponsored by WKC, WRRR, PTCC, or another club or organization in conjunction with this Event and those helping out on land.

Minors are welcome, provided their parent or guardian sign their Waiver and Release of Liability and they are accompanied by and under the supervision of an adult. To ensure that is the case, we ask that the adult register first, create a team, and then invite the minors whom the adult will be supervising to register as part of his or her team. If more than one volunteer will be in a raft or other watercraft, they should register as a team (the first volunteer to register will create the team and invite the other volunteers to register as a member of the team).

Safety First!

We will take a moment to talk about safety before volunteers launch their watercraft or collect, haul, or sort garbage and recyclables.  No volunteer should consume alcohol or drugs before or during this Event.  Volunteers who wish to consume alcohol after this Event should only do so where it is legally permitted. No volunteer may participate in this Event under the influence of alcohol or drugs. During this Event, volunteers must comply with all local, state, and federal regulations. COVID-19

We will be following all Center for Disease Control (CDC), Washington State, and Thurston County COVID-19 requirements governing outdoor, recreational events, including those pertaining to masks and social distancing. We strongly recommend that on the morning of the Nisqually River Cleanup, before arriving for this Event, each registrant use the CDC’s Isolation and Exposure Calculator. This is a tool to help you determine if you need to isolate or take other steps to prevent spreading COVID-19. Please stay home if you are experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms or have recently tested positive or been exposed to someone who has.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you should plan on making your own shuttle arrangements in advance prior to arriving at this Event.

What are the Other Requirements to Boat the River?

Volunteers who wish to boat the river must:

(a) check in with designated trip leaders before launching and after reaching the take-out;

(b) have the requisite skills to safely boat the river;

(c) be properly clothed for cold water immersion and be prepared to get wet, flip over, or go into the water;

(d) wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejacket and, for those  kayakers boating Class II and III sections of the river, a paddling helmet;

(e) bring their own suitable watercraft with appropriate flotation;

(f) boat as a group and not alone; and

(g) follow all safety instructions from trip leader, safety, and sweep boaters.

Boaters should choose the section of the river they want to clean up when registering, taking into account their skill level and the difficulty and hazards they are likely to encounter. Those boaters who are participating in this Event as members of WRRR, WKC or PTCC or another club or organization should follow the instructions of their Trip Leaders as to where and when to meet. Other boaters should plan to meet at the takeout for the section of the river they plan to boat, where we will organize shuttles to the launch site. Please arrive early enough so that you can check in, sign any necessary waivers, gear up, and be ready to shuttle by 10:00 A.M. Remember to bring water, lunch and other food to get you through the day.

We Also Need Volunteers to Help on Land at Each Water Access Site

To make this Event a success, we need volunteers to help on land. Volunteers are needed at McKenna Park and Nisqually Park .

We’ll need help with event setup, registration and check-in, hauling items we collect from boats to drop boxes at each of the take outs, sorting recyclables from garbage, photography and event cleanup. We will contact you the week prior to this Event and tell you where to meet and when.

All volunteers who plan to help at our water access sites should wear appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes and bring rain gear and work gloves. We also suggest that you bring water, lunch and whatever other food you need to get through the day.

After Event Celebration and BBQ

We hope to host a BBQ at McKenna Park starting at 3:30 for those volunteers who register in advance and indicate when they register that they plan to attend the BBQ. If the CDC COVID-19 Community Level in Thurston County is Moderate or High, we may cancel the BBQ but will notify registrants by email should this occur.

Advance Registration is Helpful and Encouraged.

We ask that you register in advance where possible. This will ensure that we have sufficient personnel and resources to make this Event a success.

Online registration will close on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 5:00 P.M. Volunteers who are unable to register in advance may register on the day of this Event between 9:00 and 10:00 A.M. at McKenna and Nisqually Park (aka Yelm Hydro Plant)..

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from this Event?

All volunteers are encouraged to carpool to the Nisqually River Cleanup. Free parking is available at both McKenna Park and Nisqually Park. A Discover Pass or WDFW Vehicle Access Pass is required to park your vehicle at the 6th Avenue SE Water Access Site. We will organize shuttles for those boating the river who are fully vaccinated and wearing masks. If you are not fully vaccinated, you should make your own shuttle arrangements in advance, before arriving at this Event.

How do I find directions to the water access sites that we’ll be using for this Event?

We will email you directions to each of the sites.

Can I update or cancel my registration?

You can update or cancel your registration online until registration closes on March 31, 2023 at 5:00 P.M. You can also update your registration in person on the day of this Event at McKenna and Nisqually Park between 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. If you want to cancel your registration after registration closes, please email us at NisquallyRiverCleanup@gmail.com. We ask all those who register to cancel their registration if they will not be joining us.

Can I get a ride on someone else’s raft or watercraft?  

No, unless you have made such arrangements in advance with another volunteer or through one of the Clubs or other organizations participating in the Event and have registered as part of a team.

What if it rains or the water level is too high or low on the day of the Event?

We plan to proceed with the cleanup regardless of rain, as long as the river is not flooding or too low and is safely navigable. We will notify those who register in advance by email if we find it necessary to cancel this Event because of safety or other concerns. We will also post signs at McKenna and Nisqually Parks should this Event be cancelled.

April 28th, 2024 Spring Picnic / Rower’s progression @ Spring Picnic

WRRR’s annual spring picnic will be moved back to Lake Ballinger Boat ramp in Mountlake Terrace.  Come dial in your flip technique and bbq in style Sunday!

The Club BBQ is Sunday, April 28th. The fun starts at 11am, and there will be a potluck BBQ – the club will provide burgers, dogs, and a grill, and you can bring some goodies to share. We can also go over other river safety topics, like Z-drags and throwbag use, for anyone who is new to this or just wants some practice.

This is a great opportunity to get together with your boating friends and meet some new people, talk gear, and even plan trips. This is a fun and entertaining day on the lake.

Usually we start by sharing stories and flipping boats.  Jim fires up the grill when people get hungry.  Hope to see you there!!!

40th Annual Green River Cleanup May 4th @ Kanasket Palmer State Park

Save the date for the 40th ANNUAL Green River Cleanup!!!! Saturday 5-4-24

Join WRRR, Paddle trails, OWA, WKC, BeWett, Nature Nuts, Boy Scouts, MGRC, WA state parks, and other several local clubs (If we missed your group let us know!) , neighbors and friends at the 40th Annual Green River Cleanup on Saturday May 6

4th!!! Every year lots of outdoor enthusiast enjoy the day recreating along the river, and cleaning up trash at the same time. As always, there will be lots to do for boaters and non boaters. River stretches are rated class 2-4. The last 3 years proved that we will boat no matter the flow! Hiking and ground crew sections are available from flat trail to adventurous river corridor cleaning. We found some huge trash areas and have local neighbor’s helping out as well!

Registration at the Headworks goes from 9:30AM-11AM. At Kanasket-Palmer State Park, you can register from 9:30AM-11:30AM. Help us clean up the Green River and keep it one of the most beautiful rivers you can raft. You can pre-register online at http://www.greenrivercleanup.org/register-for-the-clean-up/

NOTE: The following information will be updated when we have complete details. Cleanup volunteers will enjoy free camping at the Kanasket-Palmer State Park group camp on the Green on Friday and Saturday nights.   We also have camps 1-14 for large groups and RVs.    Please rsvp

WRRR will also be hosting a BBQ at Flaming Geyser Park (Picnic shelter #3). BBQ goes approx. 4-6pm.   WRRR will be providing Burgers, Brats, and main course foods.   We welcome you to bring side items potluck style!    Food is provided at no cost.   We encourage donations but they are not necessary.

There will be a DUTCH OVEN DESSERT COOKOFF, this year just like years past. IT will be held at 8:30pm at the Kanasket Palmer group camp. Show off your D.O. skills and impress your friends. Winner gets a prize which has been up to a $50 value in the past!!!

Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival @ Clackamas River, OR

The Upper Clackamas is a fun and exciting whitewater run, and every year there is a big festival that brings in lots of boaters from all over.   Covid-19 paused the celebration for a few years, but it’s back now, for what we think is the 38th Clackfest!

WRRR has stepped up our game prior to covid, with champions Shaun Heublein and Jay Cohen and many other award-winning performances. You can also get boat demos and get in a run or two on the river yourself.

Bob Johnson Memorial Wenatchee Rendezvous @ Dryden Gun Club

THE BOB JOHNSON MEMORIAL WENATCHEE RENDEZVOUS
May 31st-June 2nd, 2024 (weekend after memorial day) Camping Thursday – Sunday.

SHOTGUN START 1130!! ! A group picture will be taken at Drunkards Drop!  We will eat lunch and meet at lunch island to regroup.   Mark will call Riverbooty when we leave lunch island.

Come join your fellow WRRR members for our annual Bob Johnson Memorial Wenatchee Rendezvous. Be a part of the greatest flotilla of inflatable boats on the Wenatchee followed by camping, raffle prizes, and a potluck dinner.  Bob Johnson was one of the founders of WRRR, and every June we get together at the Wenatchee River to celebrate WRRR and its founders.

Don’t Miss It! WRRR does need your help with volunteering! We need prize table helpers, raffle ticket sellers, and Camp cleaners still!!!!

Boating: The main float is Saturday morning for some Summertime Class 3 fun!

Saturday:
-The main meet is at the Dryden gun club at 9am,
-Shuttle from East Leavenworth road at 10am. (From the Safeway in Leavenworth follow East Leavenworth road .7 miles up to the public access with a big parking area.
-The main flotilla Saturday is launching from 11:00 am 11:30am.
-Call any board member and we will relay the information to others and try to help you out. You may also coordinate with other boaters on the wrrr.org/forum and/or WRRR’s Facebook page. The shuttle is a game of skill, so make sure you coordinate well and pay attention!
-7:00pm Potluck Dinner at camp
-7:15pm General membership meeting and prizes!

THE RUN: Please remind your people of the dangers of the DRYDEN DAM! This is a drowning machine. The safest way to navigate is to portage on river right. There is a cart to assist that WRRR negotiated to have there a long time ago. There is an alternate way (experts only) to run left of the lowhead staying far away from the drowning machine. It is IMPERATIVE that you make sure your Pod understands what is going on. Please be careful not to lead other boating groups astray. Thankyou for your consideration to this matter. The Dryden dam can be easily scouted by heading north at the BIG Y Café and then heading right at the “fishing access” sign just before the bridge across Peshastin Creek. If this is your first time running the Wenatchee please contact a trip leader and they will be happy to assist you.

SAFETY: Please follow the American Whitewater safety code. PFD’s, Helmets, Wetsuit, Etc. The weather should be great so pack some water and a lunch and enjoy the day. Please pay attention to the boaters around you. With the big flotilla fun also comes some danger in the form of you getting lost in the group. Please make sure that 2-5 people are looking after you and you are looking after them. Boating in many pods in the main group are our key to success. There will be an official WRRR lead boat launching at 11am.

There will be Friday and Sunday trips also depending on interest. Check the gun club, trip leaders, or FB Groups for Friday trip planning. Sunday plans will be made in the campground Saturday night or Sunday morning. In 2013, there was a trip at 7am, so you never know unless you create it!

Most folks run the Wenatchee but there are some other nice rivers nearby, like the Chiwawa, Entiat, Methow, Icicle Creek, and Peshastin Creek. If your schedule is tight, hit the Sky on your way home. There’s plenty of runs on the “WET” side of Hwy 2. River runs ranging from class 1-5 abound in the area, so there is always something for everybody.

Camping at the old “gun club” RIGHT NEXT TO THE DAM PUT IN (Big Y Cafe area) :   We will have WRRR signs at all the turns starting at the road. We request that you keep dogs on leash and police their do-do. This camping is first come first serve. We ask that dogs be on leash or in a vehicle during the potluck/raffle. Please pickup after your pooch and respect other peoples areas. Keeping your dog on leash or in a fenced area guarantees that Pet doodoo is picked up and everybody has a great weekend. Please be courteous to our neighbors.

Saturday Night Potluck Dinner: We will be having a great meal, but we need your creative and wonderful campfire cooking skills. You bring food and your own beverages. WRRR will bring paper plates, recyclable utensils, cups and napkins. Dinner is at 7:00 PM on Saturday to allow time for the raffle and general membership meeting.

Anybody with a Dutch oven will be coveted this evening. If you aren’t sure what to bring the following is a suggestion for the type of dish to make or bring. If you have a specialty or preference please bring what you like. Last name begins with:

Raffle: Following dinner on Saturday at the gun club, the club will raffle off some great river gear. You can buy your tickets at the campground before the raffle starts (or you can buy tickets from the treasurer after the raffle is over for half price!)  Hope to see you there!
