      2. We reached out to as many groups as we could find.   Bella responded.   We have approved the scholarship of Bella Phoenix for a three day beginning kayak course with Wet Planet.  This scholarship money is funded by 100% silent auction proceeds.
      3. We have partnered with Wet Planet to get 25% off on any of their courses for BIPOC scholarships.  This will help us extend donation dollars.
      4. Jessica has developed a great tracking tool for other content on the WRRR website
      5. We are pursuing American Canoe Association Raft Instructor training and hoping to send at least two WRRR members to this training ($500 each).  This is to help with the Progression.  If we have Raft instructors on the Progression we can be covered under the ACA umbrella insurance.  *Note, discussed at the DEI committee, but will be moved to the safety committee*
      6.  We discussing the possibility of having more WRRR members be ACA raft certified which can help with trip dynamics when we have several newbies.  People can still be rafting mentors without the ACA Certification, but they cannot be covered by the ACA insurance.  More to follow in the upcoming safety committee meetings.
      7.  We look forward to working with the new board in January to start making concrete plans in this regard.
      8.  Triad, NW rafting and Wet planet are all local outfitters that are helping us.   All are assisting us with partial and / or full funding for BIPOC training and trips!  Awesome!!!

About WRRR Community News

WRRR Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

During this time of cultural reflection, WRRR like the rest of the world community, has taken time to reflect on diversity and inclusion in our club and the whitewater sport we love. We acknowledge that whitewater, like many outdoor sports, has a limited number of people of color participants. Our club wants to be a part of improving the diversity of the sport we love and making WRRR a more inclusive space. As part of the larger conversation we are looking for ways we can take real action to actively amplify diversity in our club and sport. We are committed to taking a critical look at our internal system and process to discuss inequities that keep WRRR from being a place where all people from various backgrounds and life experiences can experience the love of whitewater. Below outlines some of our initial actions and mission.

Actions Taken:

  • Assembled a preliminary committee on diversity and inclusion
  • Provide an initial response and set of priorities and mission

Top Priorities/Mission

  • Reevaluate our brand partnerships
    • Moving forward we will be conscience of partnering with brands who share our organizations values
  • Formalize our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee
    • In our next board meeting we will move to make a diversity and inclusion committee a permanent part of the WRRR board
    • The committee will have members from the board, membership, and we will seek out participation from resource experts and organizations that advance diversity and inclusion.
    • Work to support and partner with other organizations that facilitate diversity and inclusion in whitewater and/or outdoor sports to underrepresented communities
    • Educate ourselves and club members on how to be allies.
    • Support and collaborate with organizations doing the work to make positive impact on whitewater or outdoor diversity
  • Evaluate all of our club communication and documentation with a lens of equity and inclusivity

We undertake this knowing there are no easy solutions or overnight fixes and that this represents just the start. We also acknowledge that we can’t do this alone and that for it to be successful we will need the breadth of our community voices to participate in the challenging conversations and encourage participation in the committee and in respectful discourse on the topics.

Inflatable Kayaking Self Rescue Hints

I was going to write a really long article about IK self rescue, but there was just so much to say and it might be boring to a lot of people, so I decided to just give a couple of hints.

I have flipped a lot over the years, and I am not a nimble, athletic person. Getting back in the IK is hard for me, but I have found some things that help.

The main thing I do is to not let go of my boat and paddle. There are two parts to this. First, my thigh straps and footbrace lock me into the boat well enough that when I flip over, I am still in the boat. I have to flex my feet to release them from the footbrace, which allows my legs to come out. Second, when I come out of the boat, I grab my thigh strap in my right hand and hold my paddle in my left. When I come up, I am still holding my boat. I can almost always grab the far thigh strap under the boat, pull with one hand, and push the near tube up with the other. This flips the boat back over quickly, and I’m still holding onto it.

The other thing I do is to practice in rapids. Practicing in flatwater will help you learn some techniques, but flipping in a rapid will teach you how to get in fast and do it right. If you can self-rescue in a class III rapid, you are much more likely to be able to self-rescue in tougher rapids.

In the end, if you have confidence that you can get back in your boat, you can run more challenging whitewater or you can have more fun goofing around on the easier rapids.

Elections Procedures

Nominations

  • At the August board meeting, appoint the Nominating Committee Chair. The Nominating Committee Chair and members can be any club member in good standing.
  • Candidates must be members in good standing as of March 1 of the current year and must not have allowed their membership to lapse in the meantime.
  • Candidates for officers (President and VPs) should come from the existing board or be a recent officer (no more than 5 years).
  • Candidates for Directors-At-Large should consider that they will hopefully become officers.
  • The IT Specialist will provide the Nominating Committee a list of eligible candidates. This is done by going to the WRRR web site, going to the Membership Admin menu, then going to Membership Reports and choosing Eligible Candidates.
  • The Nominating Committee is expected to provide a list of candidates by October 1.

Election Preparation

  • At the September board meeting, the board should discuss finding a person to be the Elections Committee Chair. The Elections Committee Chair and members must be members in good standing but not be on the ballot.
  • At the October general membership meeting (assuming there is one), the Chairperson will introduce the nominated candidates.
  • At the October board meeting, appoint the Elections Committee Chair.
  • The IT Specialist will set up the email address election@wrrr.org to forward to the members of the Elections Committee.
  • The Elections Committee will contact each candidate to ensure that they know they are running. (Why? Because we have had a candidate that did not know they were running.)

Balloting

  • The IT Specialist will create and send out the ballot to all eligible club members on November 1.
  • The President or web site admin will send a current roster to the Elections Committee so that they can verify that club members only vote once. (Note: Prior to 2013, some memberships got 2 votes, but this is no longer the case.)
  • Club members will have until November 15 to send in their ballots.
  • Email ballots will be collected and tallied by the Elections Committee.
  • Paper ballots will be collected by the person who picks up the mail. This person will make the ballots available to the Elections Committee.

Results

  • On December 1, the Elections Committee will announce the tally on the WRRR Forums Board of Directors forum.
  • The Elections Committee will contact the winners to verify that they know they won and are expected to come to the next board meeting. (Why? We have had a person who was elected and didn’t know it.)
  • After verification, the IT Specialist will send the results to all eligible club members.
  • The January issue of the Waterlog, which is sent out in late December or early January, will also contain the results of the election.
  • The January issue of the Waterlog will be updated to reflect the new Board of Directors in the masthead. Committee assignments will be modified in the February issue.
  • After January 1, the IT Specialist will update the web site’s Board of Directors list for the new year.
